Mr and Mrs R. N. Boyce, of Renwick, have received cabled news from the Middle East stating that their son, Gunner Mervyn Neal Boyce, had been discharged from hospital. The Blenheim Chamber of Commerce has nominated its president (Mr W. G. Cresswell) for a seat on the executive of the Associated Chambers of Commerce. Gunner J. F. D. Corry, of Parnell, elder soh of Mrs J. J. Corry, Maxwell road, has returned from the Middle East with the latest batch of sick and wounded N.Z.E.F. personnel. Barbara Dix, the nine-year-old daughter of Mr and Mrs C. C. Dix, succeeded in passing with 75 marks her fourth dancing examination, conducted in Christchurch last week by Miss Kathleen Danetree, of the Royal Academy of Dancing. With her mother, she returned from Christchurch yesterday. The newly-appointed members of the Picton Borough Council, Messrs A. E. Butterworth and J. P. Young, took their seats at the meeting on Thursday night. They were appointed by the Council to fill the vacancies caused by the retirement of Crs. J. A. Barker and J. A. BreayLey, who resigned on aqcount of their war duties. Captain A. C. Wood, D.C.M., has returned wounded to Nelson after being in the thick of the fighting in Greece, Crete and Libya. He was formerly R.S.M. of the Maori Battalion, and has since been on its permanent staff. % Captain Wood was head boy of Nelson College in 1936, and went overseas at the age of 23 with the Second Echelon. Pilot Cfficer C. H. ("Mac") Baigent, of Nelson, has recently been promoted in England to flight lieutenant, a double step. After gaining his commission at Woodbourne, he arrived in England last January, and since May has been captain of a Stirling bomber on operations over Germany, including the 1000-bomber raid on Bremen. Two well-known Marlborough soldiers in the persons of Frank and ("Manny") Hodson and R, J. Gifford, are to reach Blenheim this evening after having seen extensive service in the Middle East. The exact time of their arrival is not at present known, but arrangements are being made for i their welcome, and they are later to be the guests of honour at a gathering at the Services C'lub. The death has occurred in Wellington of Mr Arthur Francis Humphries Sutherland, elder son of Mr and Mrs B. Sutherland, Homewood, Karori, after a two months' illness. Mr Sutherland was in his thirty-fifth year, and for the past 12 years had been managing director of the SelfHelp Co-op., Ltd., and National Distributors, Ltd. He was a man of undoubted commercial ability and by his kindly and active interest in their welfare endeared himself to members of his staff. The founding of the Sutherland Self-Help Trust in- July of last year was the suggestion of Mr Sutherland, who made the first grant of £5000. He was instrumental in introducing staff bonus and benefit schemes and giving financial assistance to members of the staff in the armed forces, and he arranged for the regular despatch of parcels to men overseas.
