MARLBOROUGH COUNTY
COUNCIL'S ORDINARY MEETING. WORKS FOR THE MONTH. The Marlborough County Council met yesterday when there were present Crs. J. Kennington (chairman), E. G. Pike, R. J. Cresswell, A. M. W. Adams, A. H. Nees, L. C. Leov, R. Forsyth and S. J. Ball. Leave of absence was granted to Crs. F. W. Pattie, H. J. Stace, and F. E. Fairweather. Zone representatives on the Marlborough Patriotic Council were appcinted as follows: — Pelorus, Messrs W. A. Adams and W. A. Maclaine; Wairau, Messrs R. Greig and M. Evans; Omaka, Messrs R. Forsyth and F. Mogridge; Spring Creek-Pic-ton, Messrs J. B. Barnett and J. S. Hill. The county representative, Cr. J. Kennington, was appointed at the previous meeting. Dedication of a portion of the main Rapaura road near Spring Creek, from Mrs A. Redwood, to bring the road to full width, was accepted by the council. The Kenepuru Road Board forwarded information of the work required on the track from Mahakipawa to Mahau for which they had offered to provide labour, in all about three weeks' work for one man. It was agreed to proceed with the work. The engineer was instructed to inspect a eulvert at Kaituna about which Mr L. Gibson had complained. ENGINEER'S REPORT. The engineer's report on work done during the month was as follows: — — Main Highways. — The Renwick -Branch road has been graded and one grader has given particular attention to one section. The stringers for Saltwater Creek bridge and Birch Hill bridge have been delivered and a commencement has been made with their repairs. The Traverse Hill has had attention. The Branch-Tophouse road has had general maintenance and the groyne above the Wash bridge, although slightly damaged, is doing excellent work. The Kaituna-Tua Marina road has had some trees removed, growth cut back, and watertables attended to, a eulvert has been repaired and willows planted. The Spring Creek-Rarangi road has been graded. The Blenheim Aerodrome road has received attention by grading and by patching. Advice has been received that the Highways Board are agreeable to sealing the approaches to the Taylor bridge, and proposals have been prepared to do the work using tar and beach metal. The bullgrader has been engaged on the PietonGrove road removing shps and in widening the road where the outside of the roadway has subsided It was found necessary in some places to widen the road some distance in order to prevent bad corners. The road is now clear although some small slips have occurred since the machine has passed through. Metalling is being carried out on the sections widened. The P.W.D. are engaged in repairing the road from Shakespeare Bay to Wedge Point, and a good surface should be obtained again in the near future. The Havelock-Grove road is receiving attention and slips, etc., are being removed. At the Grove wharf owing to the exten't of the slips, and owing to the sodden nature of the country a eulvert has been abandoned and another constructed near by. On the foreshore further slips are being removed and attention will then be given to the Maori Reserve sidling and the Mahakipawa Hill. Portion of the Renwick-Summerlands road has been graded. — General Roads and Works. — The Opouri, Pretty's, Williams's and Ronga roads have been graded. Some growth on the Opouri road has been cut back and watertables cleaned. Some patch-metalling has been carried out on the Ronga and Carluke-Rimu Valley roads. A eulvert has been installed on the Maungatapu road. A new eulvert has been placed on Murray's road. The watertables, etc. in the Wakamarina have been attended to and some repairs have been carried out to Rush's suspension bridge Protective works have been carried out on Jones's road Kaituna stream, by placing of willows and clearing a block. Some repairs have been eflected to Anakiwa road. A further slip blocked the Waikawa road and a roadway was cut through it. Repairs have been eflected to Para road and Mud road. Some metalling has been carried out on the Avondale road and watertables have received attention. Repairs have been eflected to the Waihopai Valley road and it should be in good order when graded. Maher's flat has been graded and rninor repairs eflected to the road. Good progress is being made on the Taylor Pass road, the first ford has been stabilised and the third crossing is now completed. The deviation of the road between the first and second crossings is awaiting the completion of the construction work across the creek where good progress is being maintaind. This road has been graded and the Maxwell Pass road has been trimmed up. The New Renwick road has been graded and some patch-metalling has been carried out. Some strip metalling has been carried out on Hammerich's road The following roads have been graded: Dillon's Point, Wairau West, Vickennan street,
Steam Wharf, Watson's, Miils's and Ford's, School road, Peninsula, Wairau Pa, Spring Creek-Rarangi, Spring Creek-Wairau bridge, and side roads, Graham's road, Renwick Middle road, Thomson's, Farnham, Springlands, and Redwoodtown. Some of the Alabama ditches have been cleaned and also one on Muller road. A letter from T. J. Teschemaker asked that the Avon ford be repaired as soon as possible in order that mails for a number of .settlers could be brought through. It was decided to reply that every effort would be made to keep the ford open. At the instance of Mr W. Greensill, Picton, it was decided to appoint Mr Nimmo, cf Waikawa, ranger for that area. It was decided to make the appointment at a salary of £2 2s per year plus all fees. Accounts totalling £2165 16s 9d of which £1712 were on general account, were passed for payment. V
