The promotion of Lieutenant V. P. Boot, former New Zealand half-mile running representative, to captain, has been announced in the Gazette. Mrs Allan Vorbach, of Blenheim, has received a card from her nephew, Private Len Nicoll, who was taken prisoner in Greece, sayihg that he is in good health. Inquiries made at the Wairau Hospital this morning indicate that there has been a slight improvemeni in the condition of Sergeant-Major T. V. Gledhill, who was injured at Rarangi on Tuesday. Miss R. (Bobbie) Bythell, youngest daughter of Mr and Mrs R. V. Bythell, of George Street, has left for Pahiatua, where she has taken up a position as land girl on a sheep station. The death has occurred at Wellington of Mrs Mary Ellen Hansell,wife of the Rev. Archdeacon A. L. Hansell, of Karori, and the eldest daughter of the late Archbishop Julius. She is survived by her husband and two daughters. A poliee constable who has risen to the rank of lieutenant-colon'el in the 2nd N.Z.E.F. figures in a list of promotions in the Gazette. He is Lieut.C'olonel W. A. T. McGuire. Before the wai* he was stationed at Auckland, and in his spare time served in the Territorials with the rank of major. Members of the Poliee Force have to obtain permission before they are allowed) to join the armed forces, but Lieut.-Colonel McGuire was lent to the Army because of his special qualifications. He went overseas as a captain in the Army Service Corps. Guests at the Criterion Hotel last night included Mr A. L. Robertson, Mr P. Thomas and Master Thomas, Mr and Mrs C. P. McKenzie, Mrs J. A. Gilmour (Wellington), Mrs l. M. Chernside, Miss V. Signal (New Plymouth), Mr and Mrs R. O. Schmidt, Messrs O. D. Chatfield, H. Wright, D. D. MacArthur (Christchurch), Mrs I. A. Welsh, Mrs J. Rennie, Mr and Mrs C. Blackledge (Dunedin), Mrs G. Slinn, Dr L. A. Lewis (Nelson), Miss N. Renton (Auckland), Mr D. E. Campbell (Hastings), Mr and Mrs A. K. Hodder (Taihape), Mr J.A. Mclvor, Mr D. Reed (Kaikoura).
