RAI VALLEY'. WOMEN'S INSTITUTE. Express Special Service. The monthly meeting of the Opouri Women's Institute was held in the hall. In' the absence of Mrs N. Simonsen, the chair was occupied by Mrs A. Carpenter. Nine members were present and apologies for absence were received from a number. Letters of sympathy were directed to be sent to Mrs Lamb, Spring Creek, whose son has been posted as missing, and Mrs Murray, whose husband is a patient in the Wairau Hospital. Acknowledgement of a eash donation was received from Mrs Twomey, the secretary of the Makogai leper appeal fund. Mrs L. Simonsen gave a cornprehensive report on the business done at the half-yearly council meeting. Competitions were won as follows: Mystery parcel, Mrs L. Kerr; silver cup, Mrs N. Simonsen, with a jar of preserved fruit; best bloom, Mrs Carpenter first, Mesdames Maclaine and L. Kerr second equal. The hostesses for the day were Mesdames E. Wallace and L. Kerr. ANGLICAN CHURCH MEETING. A meeting of the Rai Valley Anglican church committee was held in the library. The Rev. H. F. Flatt, who presided, gave a review of business done at the recent vestry meeting and of the allocations made to the various districts to meet the eommitments for the recently .purchased vicarage. Members expressed dissdtisfaction at straying stock being found in the Church grounds," and it v/as decided to have the gate f astenings repaired to stop the nuisance. Mr Flatt announced that arrangements Were in hand for "Temple Day," to be held on December 6. He asked if the meeting knew of any conflrmation candidates in the district. Arrangements for the annual Christmas tree were discussed, and it was decided to leave arrangements as they were made for last year's function. ANNUAL LIBRARY MEETING. The annual meetilng of the Rai Valley Library Association was held in the building on Tuesday, Mr H. Frost presiding over a sparsely attended gathering. The secretary, Mrs N. B Schroder, read the report and balance sheet, which were regarded as very favourable, especially when it was disclosed that the building had been painted, a new pumice copper installed, and £3 worth of books placed on the permanent shelves, and sundry small improvements affected. It was decided to allow Mr Beattie the use of the section at the back in return for the keeping in order of the front section. Ihe following committee was elected: Mr H. Frost (chairman), Mrs Schroder (secretary), and Mesdames Moore, Haisman, and Templeman, ali re- elected. WOMEN'S DIVISION. The monthly meeting- of the Rai Valley Women's Division (Farmers' Union) was held in the library on Wedensday, Mrs Hill presiding over tlie following attendance of members : Mesdames Couper, L. Twidle, Leov, sen., Williams, Young, Gwynn, Pretty,

Boon, Flowers, Wells, Hughes, L-JS Simonsen, and Mrs Moore (the secre- ) 8 tary), Mrs Nichollson and Miss E. JJ Andrews, O.B.E., were welcomed. A j | number of absence apologies were re- j | ceived. Mrs Hill read the quarterly letter from the Dominion president, Mrs Orr, and also extracts from the N.Z. Countrywoman Arrangements were discussed and finalised for the iorthooming visit of Miss M. Cocks Johnston and members were reminded that they were entitled to invite friends. A saies table of plants did good business, a satisfactory sum being netted to augment the branch fund. The president introduced Miss Andrews to the meeting, and members settled down to listen to an interesting analytical lecture on social ' problems which are disturbing think- | ing people to-day. While afternoon | tea was being served Mrs Gwynn | gave a delightful elocutionary item, I Kipling's "Glory of the Garden." The j best bloom competition resulted: £ Mrs Boon first, Mrs Hill second.
