BASE HEAVILY HAMMERED
B.O.W.
RUGBY, Oct. 14.
In good weather last night a strong bomber force attacked Kiel. Nine bombers are missing. Coastal Command Eeauflghters yesterday destroyed two Junkers 88s and a flying-boat in the Bay of Biscay without loss.
The Army Co-operation Command yesterday attacked a goods train and other targets in Northern France, also without loss. Last night's raid on Kiel was the heaviest of the 70 it has had, says the Air Ministry. For an hour the defences were faattered until searchlights were wavering in every direction and the gunfire became ineffective. The smoke-screen, which is regularly put up whenever our bombers approach Kiel, provided little protection. The crews found Kiel, in the words of a pilot, "lighted up like daylight" by huge flres and a multitude of flares. The fires were so bright that oply the bursts of the biggest bombs could be distinguished among them. Two people were injured and slight damage was done when two enemy flghters attacked a place in southeast England to-day.
