WAR COUNCIL SATISFIED
THE POSITION IN NEW GUINEA.

CANBERRA, Oct. 15.
After careful analysis of rep-orts of high Service officers and Ministers. the Wai- Council yesterday expressod satisfactio-n with the sit-ua-tion in New Guinea. Following recent critlcism of the Army in New Guinea, the War Council's view, expressed with complete knowledge of the factis of the position, is regarded as being specially important. After its meeting the Prime Minister, Mr Curtin, stated that the> Council was satisfied with the state of affairs in New Guinea. It accepted the situation as being the. result o-f the splendid direction of the recent fighting in New Guinea, which showed that considerable quantities of equ.ipment had been captured and substantial casualties inflicted on Ihe enemy. The Japanese had been | compelled to abandon fixed positions which had been strongly prepared torea:- st attack. ■
