About 2000 bicycles are stolen in Christchurch every year,' according to figures supplied by Mr C. Bell, president of the North Canterbury Whole - sale and Retail Cycle Traders' Association. More than 1500 bicycles had this year alone been found or taken into the police station, Mr Bell said, ancl about 400 of them were still at the station unclaimed. A large number of bicycles claimed were, moreover, stripped of tyres or essential fittings. When it was considered that 50,000 bicycles were in use in Christchurch the present position meant that a figure approaching perhaps one in 20 of these bioycles were stolen and either not returned _ to owners or returned after being stripped.
