It is, officially stated that a hundred people are missing and immense damage has be'en done. All telegraphic and railway communioatiohs are suspended. It is reportea that :a, big river steamer sank near Dhubri and heavy loss of life. is feared. People are living in the trees and on the housetops, while thousands of starvmg refugees are flocking into the towns, The lloods are the most severe in living memory, due to 15 days of uninterrupted monsoon rainfall in the Hlmalayan. foothills.
