(Received June 27, 10.5 a.m.) LONDON, June 26. In the open golf chainpionship James Adams and Alliss, with 67, beat the course record at Deal. Scores of 152 or better qualify for the cliampionship proper. In achieving his course record of 66 in the first round at Sandwich Cotton went cut in . 31 and home in 35 and had nothing -worse than a four. Shute, the holder of the title, was un convincing. The weather favoured low scores, there being no wind. Critics* and Cotton himself, agreed that he played the best round ot his eareer. His 66 is 12 below bogey for the 6770 yard course. One hundred and two players have qualified. Gadd's aggregate is five less than in any of the previous qualifying rounds. The critics emphasise the gratifying display of the British golfers, revealing stroke-saving on the igreens. Adams, the 23-yea;r-old Irish champion, putted wonderfully, going out in 32 and home in 35. All the Americans qualified. Kirkwood strained his: shoulder. He might have haid an excellent score, but took 20 for the last four holes. He made a, magnificent shot at the fifth, where his hall was lying on the downslope of ia bunker. He took a lefthanded No. 2 iron and hit the hall to the green 190 yards away and got a par four.
