Lott troubled the Italian with heavily-sliced shots, Austin was in great form and convincingly defeated Denker. Perry continued to display confident stroking and he is the definite favourite for the title with English enthusiasts. Menzel overwhelmed Gentien, while Hecht's coolness and fast fcotwork were responsible for the elimination of Maiers. Nishimura, playing against Siba, had a point for a 5-0- lead in the fifth set, yet lost. Crawford did not take his match against the German Henkel seripusly and experimented with cuts 'and slices with an extra tight racquet. Turnbull, whose all-round game has greatly improved, served magnificentiy and completely outplayed Mlki.
