UPWARD TREND IN BUSINESS.

EXPERIENCE IN UNITED STATES " How's business ?" This is a question which (the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce says in a letter of May 30 addressed to "business friends" in New Zealand) is being asked in each of our countries. Speaking for our own city and county, we are happy to report upward trends, The first quarter figures show that wholesale grocery business improved from 12 per cent. to 15 per cent., wholesale drugs 30 per cent. to 36 per cent., and the department store business has been running from 12 per cent. to 18 per cent. better. The total for all motor car saies showed a gain of 87 per cent. and commercial car saies a gain of 181 per cent. Factory employment has increased about 39 per cent., while factory payrolls increased about 45 per cent. Foreign trade, both import and export, have increased considerably, with indications of additional volume during the next quarter. It will be noted from these figures that the trend is upw^ard, and it is the opinion of business men that the upward trend will continue. There have been, however, some labour troubles, which are probably another sign that business is getting better.
