At an auction sa-le in Auckland a few days ago a lot of 700 shares in a southern gold sluicing concern was offered by way of a diversion from the more material blocks of land. The shares were forfeited ones, and there was no reserve on them. The auctioneer warned prospective buyers that there might be calls to pay in the future if they became possessed of the shares. Nobody seemed very keen to take the risk (says the Auckland Star), and the auctioneer had to suggest that someone should name a price. A man who probably had no intention of buying the shares when he entered the auction room offered 10s, and was no doubt very surpr'sed to flnd that they were knocked down to him. The price of the shares worked out at about six a penny, so if any gold at all is found they. should at least pay . for themselves.
