WOMEN AND MINING

SPECULATION IN SYDNEY. WORRIES OF SHAREBROKERS. Women in Sydney are taking a noticeable interest in goldmining enterprises. Brokers who speak of this development do not approve of it Women admit that women are enti-tl-ed to gamble if they please, just as men do, but they sa-y that women are not like men in comprehending the differenee between speculation and investment. Gambling is not new to them, for Ihe raees and the State 1-ottery have attracted many. Dab- . bling on the1 Stock Exchange is different. The Sydney correspondent of the Melbourne Argus says: "A woman, ha-ving wheedled a tip from a re1 luctant: broker, buys -gold shares and in a fortnight, say, makes a kill, selling on the broker's advice and making a profit. She tells; her per- ' sonal friends in the strictest confidence what happened, and the unhappy broker is soon asked by several women to do for them what he did for Mrs! — or Miss — . He regrets that he was ever weak enough to be cajoled. He has not heard the last of the first incident "It may be that the woman who made a profit finds that the shares went still higher after she' had sold and she calls on the broker to ask for an explanation. Any da-y women may be seen in the vestibule of the Stock Exchange examining the boards which set forth the saies."
