Many lives were lost and thousands of people are homeless, ias the result of widespread floods in eastern Bengal and Assam, due to several days: of ineessant and torrential rain. Railway line® and bridges were destroyed and agricultural land was inundated. A downpour in the Himalavan foothills of unprecedented severity is taking a heavy toll of jungle life, and carcases of elephants, tigers, and leopards have been observed in the Bramaputra river.
