A man who is known to Scotland Yard as ihe "sliekesb hotel tliief in the country," is believed to have been icsponsible for a £2000' jewellery coup at a West End hotel. Carry ing a luxurious eroeodile leather pqrtmanteau, a man arriverl at Earle's Hotel, Grosvenor Street, and, after signing the register, yetired to his roonis, ostensibly to cliange for dinner. Afterwards it was discovered tliat visits were mad© to roonis whose occupUnts were; at tlinner. From one, jewellery valued at £2000 had disappeared. A diamond necklace, a peail necklace, an cmerakl ring, twenty brooclies, a gokl pendant, wristlet watches, and bracelets were among the missing property, also. a good sum in banjv notes. When th© robberies were; discovered dcfectives were summoiicd. Their attention was drawn to the faot that one of the guests in ihe liotel was rnbsing. The missing gnest's room was entered and his portmaiiteau opened,. Inside were found two shirts and a, steel jemmy. _ A fingerprint suggeeted to the poliee that a clcver hotel thief for whom they are sea reh ing may have taken part in this coup. The missing guest signed the hotel register in the name of Fenwick. He is deseribed as about 32 yca.rs of age' and 5ft 4in in height. One of the ladies who has'suffered cciisiderabl© loss of jewels and money lias hooked to lcave for New Zealand a few days liencn.
