LAST NIGHT'S 'MEETING. T'he adjourned monthly meeting of the Blenheim Borpugh Council was held' last evening at the Council Ohambers. His Worship tlie Mayor (Alr M. MeKenzie) presided, and there were also present: Coun.cillors John Wemyss, T. B. Salmon, E. S. Parker, J. J. O'Halloran, P. S. Boyes, and W. Carr, witli tlie Toivn Clerk (Mr T. F. Bn.ll), and Borough Engineer (Mr John Annabeli). Leave of absenee was accorded Mrs F. Redwood and Councillor R, NobleAdams. OORR ES 1 ' ( )N DENCE. Messrs Beavon and Fisher applied for perni ission to erect a kerbside benzine purnp in Grove Ttoad. — Granted, subject to tlie regulations. The Depufy Chief Surveyor, Blenheim, advised that additional work in connection with the Standard Survey of Blenheim had been approveil by ihe Surveyor-General, who had arranged that levels would be taken oi' each corner block and these would be shown on the plans, a copy of which woulci be furnished to the Council on completion of the work.— A resolution expressing the C'ouncil's tlnanks to the Department was carried, it being explained that the flxing of tlie levels would be of the utmost value, as would the plans. The Exeeutors of the late Mr William Pollard forwarded a copy of a lefter received from Mrs Pawley, a half-sister of the deceased gentleman, expressing her appreciation of ihe Council 's action in changing the name of Waterlea Park to Pollard Park in, honor oi' her brother's memory . — Received . A. E. Bartlett and six other Riversdale residents forwarded a petition praying for relief against w'ahdering stock, particularly at night. — The roatter was referred to the Ranger, with instruetions to institute a proseicution against offonders in Riversdale and in other parts of the Borough. Oouneillors expressing the opinion that it is quite time that the wandering stock nuisance was put a stop to. B. Hester wrote applying for permission to drain his section into the Redwood Street ditch. — Per m ission was granted to drain surface and sub-soil water into ihe ditch. COMMITTEE REPORTS. The Abattoir Oommittee (Councillor Salmon, chairman) reported that the new sheep yards were practically finished, but some concreting work had yet to be done to cornplete them. The committee had askecl the engineer to submit a price for tarrjng all woodwork in both sheep and cottle pens, ancl painting the new

pig " pens. — Ihe report was adopted without discussion. The By-Laws Oommittee (Councillor Wemyss, acting-chairman), recommendecl, in connection with a request for permission to, run the effluent from the septic tank at' the Blenheim Club into ihe clrain in High Street, that the applicant be informed that as the Council is not aware of the present state of the High Street drain, he cannot be granted permission, but if he will pay the cost involved in ascertaining the condition of the drain, the Council is prepared to reoonsider the matter.

The following suggestions were forwarded by Councillor Salmon for the consideration of the committee: (1) That suitable badges be proeured for our Traffic Inspector and any honorary or assistant inspector that may be appointed. (2) That the Town C'lerk and Engineer he requested to act as honorary inspeetors and be duly authorised to do so. The committee recammended that the Engineer be instructedi to have white

lines paintea at tne principal corners and that an advertisement be insertecl regarding red reflectors on cycles.- — The report was adopted. The Water and Sewerag© Committee (Councillor Parker, acting-chair-man) recommended that the application of Mr A. T. Viekers for an extraord i nary supply of water to his section in Opawa Street, outside the Borough be granted subject to an annual payment of £5, and to the usual provisions governing a supply of water outside the Borough, also that on payment of the first £5 a pipe bo laid from the South Street main to the Borough boundary, as the applicant is a Borough, ra.tepayer . — Adopted . The report of the Gas Committee (Councillor Wemyss, chairman) was of a purely formal natur©_ and was adopted without discussion. WORKS COMMITTEE. The Works Committee! (Cduncillor Parker, chairman) reported: A letter was received from. the Ohurch of Nativity Vestry regarding damage likely to result from the erection of the Waterlea bridge, and is referred to the Council for consideration. A letter was received from the Wairau River Board, regarding liability for damage which may be caused by the erection of buildings near the river bank at the Gasworks, and was referred to the Gas Committee. A letter was received from the N.Z. Railways advising that t-lie Department is prepared to lease to the Oouncil at a peppercorn rental a piece of land at the corner of Halifax aud Redwood Streets for road purposes. — The committee recommends that the offer of the Railway Department be accepted and the fee of £1 for preparation of the deeds be paid. The chairman reported that Mr J. L. Homes had applied for permission to connect with ' the George Street drain, and liavi ng arranged with Messrs Goodman, Bythell, and Broadhurst to contribute a total sum of £10 towards the cost of piping and filling this drain to connect with Peroy Street drain-pipe. Alembers of the committee had agreed to have the work done and allow Mr Homes to connect. It was agreed that this action be confirmed. and the engineer was instructed to lay a 12in. pipe in the drain and fill same in as soon- as possible. Arisiiig out of the engineer's report the committee recommended that the offer of Mr A. Diincan to dedicate a strip of land on the west side of Eltham Road provicling the Oouncil form a substantial footpath and undcrtake the cost of dedication be accepted, and the footpath be gone on with, providing that only cost of Ihe deed of dedication. without survey, is to be borne by the Council; that property owners on the west side of Maxwell Road from Leitrim Street to Eltham Road bo notified to set back their fences to the correct boundary line; that the engineer arrange to gather loose stumps in Stratford Street into heaps and burn same when convenient; that the engineer bo instructed to prepare for next Council meeting plans and estimates of cost for the reconstruction of Main Street and Grove Road, separate estimates to be made lor the sealing oi these roads. The letter from the Vestry notified

that in the event of the proposed Waterlea bridge damming back river water, the Vestry would hold the Council liable for any damage sustained by the Church property. — This letter was. on the motion of tlie Mayor, referred to the Borough Solicitor. The report as a whole was adopted. FINANCE. The Financial Committee (Councillor Boyes, chairman) reported: Lefter received from the Marlborough Electric Power Board requesting exemptiou of rates on property in Borough. — It was deeided to defer this matter for further consideration, in view of the fact that the Power Board may be regarded) as abusiness eoncern. Letter received from the Commissioner of- Crown Lands requesting a donation towards the improvemcnfs to the Pelorus Bridge Scenic Reserve.— Ma-tter referred to Progress League. Aceounts were passed for payment as under: — Gas, £1599 17s llcl ; other than gas, £3369 19s lld.— The report was adopted.
