A Svdney Press oablegram reports the death of Mr Alexander Charles Saxton , a prominent timber merohant. He was born in Auckland 61 vears ago. Mr Saxton was drowned through being swept overboard from a yacht by the swing of the boom. Mr W. Sutherland, assistant copy supervisor at tlie Government Printino- Office at Wellington, retired yesterday after 40 years' service. W Nosworihv) announced at Wellington last iiight that the Government had appointed Mr George McNamara to the position of Secretary of the Post and Telegraph Department as successor to Mr A. f Markman, who retires at the end of October. Mr McNamara, who now liolds tlie position of First-Assistant Secretary, will be- succeeded in that office by Mr J- Robertson, at present Second Assist-ant-Secretary, who in turn will be succeeded by Mr M. B. Bsson, Chief rnspector of the Department. A Feilding Press Association telegram states that Mr Norman Garton, wlio was 60 years of age yesterday, suffered a heart seizuro this morning while preparing the valuation of stocks at" Fern Flats (Marton), passing away before tlie arrival of the doctor. Mr Garton was the doyeii of the auetioneering business in the Manawatu. He began opcrations at Bulls in, 1879, and became manager of the Feilding branoh of Levin and Compaily in 1916, retiring to private life. ffe was the best known stock auctioueer and land valuer on the West Coast. Prior to commencing the business at last evening's. meeting of the Blenheim Borough Council, His Worship the Mayor referred in feeling tones to Ihe death of Mr E. H. Pennv, an cx-Mayor and ex-Council-lor of the Borough. He said Mr Peifny was -one of Blenheim', s most valueo citizens and his death came as a gi-eat shpck to the eommunity. The Council carried in silence a resolntiori placing on reoord their regret at Mr Penny's death and formally appvovcd of the Mayor's action in instructing the Town Clerk to> forward a letter, • expressing sympathy and condolence, to the late Mr Pennv's relatives.
