EBB OF THE TIDE

FLOUR 1MOVFS GOWNWARD. Within the last few days in Wellington the prioe of flour has fallen £1, from £19 5s jwr ton f.o.h. southern ports, less 2£ per cent., toi £18 5s with same terms. The Wellington bakers- recently . raised the price of the 21b loaf by $d. They claim that they were slow in following the upwarcf movement of flour, and thereby incurred losses (says the Post). If so, it follows that they may be slow in following the new downward movement of flour ; but a good deal will no doubtdepend on whether that movement will continue. The new Australian crop is drawing nearer, and Australian holders may discount their stocks accordiugly. If the fluctuating price of flour in its downward movement is as spasmodic as it Avas in the aseending scale the fuitiu'e will not be easily disoerned. A Christchurch paper remarks : "How the Department (Industries and Oommeroe) will view the present prioe of bread in Christchurch, in relation to the lower prioe of flour, remains to be seen." It is understood that the I>epartment is in touch with the general position, which varies in prices and in circumstanoes in different localities, but ■ that the market changes tliat have occurred and may occur make it difficult to arrive at any ground for action.
