SeA'-eral cases for the recovery by C'lutha County Council o-f rates levied on behalf of tlie Southland Poiver Board were settled without coming before the Magistrate at Balclutha last week. Tt liad been intended to contest the rates, which were levied over unreticulated districts, but a recent test case at Invercargill showed the futility of defending such claims und-er the law as it stends.
