NEW LONDON TUBE

LONGEST TUNNEL IN THE AVORlJl. CLAPHAM TO MORDEN. LONDON, Sept. 13. With the opening of the new liuc from Clapham to Morden. on which the first train was driven -by Lieut.Colonel J. Moore-Brabazon, Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Transport, the old Hampstead Tube now stretclies from Edgw-are to Morden, and traverses the heart of London. It has a length of 214 miles, 164 miles of which are underground. This part constitutes the world 's longest tunnel. The full fare for the journey is 9d. The extension, with a. loop connecting Charing Cross and Kensington, eost £5,000,000. The tube service now extends northwards and southwards for miles beyond the present residential area of the metropolis. The railway at present is called the Hampstead Tube, and the citv Q-uthoritieS are seeking a "portmanteau" word such as "Bakerloo" (which means from Baker Street to Waterloo station). Lieutenant-Oolofiel Moore-Brabazon, spe-aking iat, a luncheon, sugges-ted "Test Tube." This was irot in reference to the f act that the tube passes the Oval, but, he said, the tube would be a test as to whether Londoners would continue their preferenee for the omnibus. Lord Ashfield, he-ad of the London General Omnibus Company and the underground railwavs, said £82,000.000 represented the Underground Company 's share of the £125,000,000 which is sunk in the London traffie systems. The Morden tube must carry 90,000,000 passengers a vear to be profitable.
