MR B. R. HAMMOND APPOTNTED DIRECTOR. The appointment of Mr B. R. Hammond, architect and town-plan-ning consuitant, of Auckland, as Director of Town Planning under tlie legislation passed in tho last seesion of Parliament, is announced 111 this week's Gazette He is to hold office for twelve months. Mr Hammond is a New Zealander, and has gained jirominence in tlie last three or four years as the winner of the Orakei (Auckland) and Lower Hutt tovvn planning comi>etitions. He made a special study of town planning in England, where he took a course at University College, London, under Professor Adshead. Mr Hammond was largely conccrned in tbe framing of tlie Town Planning Bill which was passed in tlie recent session of Parliament, and was a member of the C'ommission set up by the. Governrnent this vear to report upon the improvemenf of Native villages at Ohinemutu and Wakarewarewa. The Acb provides that the Director shall be appointod for a torm not exoeeding fiv© years, but that he shall be cligible for reappointment at tlie expiration of liis torm of office. He is to be a member of the Town Planning Board, and in addition to other duties he is authorised to certify plans of suhdivision of lands for towns, as pro\ided for in the Land Act.
