"COME TO BRITAIN"

ATTRACTIONS FOR TOURISTS. M AN Y NATUR AL BEAU T I ES . LONDON, Aug. 11. How best to tell tlie world of the natural beauties of England and of its great and varied interests — artistic, archaeological, and * historical — - ©specially to tlie tourist, was the subject of a confe-rence piesided over by Mr A. M. Samuel, Parliamentary Secretary to the Department of Ovenseas Trade, at their oflices 111 Westminster. Representatives of the steamship lines," tlie railway companies and hotel companies, tlie Ministry of Transport, and tlie Colonial Offiee were all present. Sir Francis Towle, chairman of the recently formed "Come to Britam" ^ Committee, placed the views of that body betore tlie conferenee ,and full discussion followed. A general feeling was expressed that Great Britain does not take tlie steps to attract tourists, especiallv from Amerioa, that the l-emark-able interests of the mother eountry warrant, and that much might be done, not merely 111 placing vivid descriptions of tliese before the vast populations overseas, but also in facilitating the influx of Eurqpean visitors to this country. Mr Samuel expressed on behalf of the Governnient, sympathy with tlie niovement. He said tliat the Gov-. ernment recognised the greatr importance of securing the largest possible nuniber of visitors, both as a means of promoting international unity and also 011 business and financial grounds. He expressed the hope that thev would co-ordinate their efforts, and promised that the Governnient woukl give every asjsistance in its power. It is understood that no financial assistanc© can be given to tlie movenient by the Board of Trade, but that the promoters are considering a proposal whereby the municipalities of seaside and other health resorts shall be invited to oontribute to- a central fuad at tlie rate of £1 per thousand of population.
