A WOMAN'S THEFTS
MONEY USED FOR BETTING.

WELLINGTON, Sept. 29. A woman aged 26, formerly in the employment of Kirkcaldie ancl Stains as a clerk, was charged to-day with the tlieft of £251 9s 8d, the property of the firm. Mr Arehibald, the company 's seeretary, gave evidence that the accused was with the firm for eight years. About September 15th he had occasion to c|uestion the accused in regard to a refund a customer had not received. The accusecl 's explanation was not satisfactory, and she was suspended. On the following day she came to him and said that at various times she had stolen sums entered as refunds. The refunds were usually to country customers who had sent too much for goods hought by them. The accused had made restitutipn of £130. Detective Bavliss said that the accused, when interviewed. said she had clone a good deal of betting, o-jving the money to another employee to put on horses. The accused ploaded guiltv ancl was oommitted for sentence. The nam'e is still suppressed.
