A large nnmber of the-se vve-i'e shop a-ssi.stants with three or four years' exp-erieiioe, and many others were y-oung girls who had not previ-ously been employed. Under tli-e caption "Exhibition Activities" in the annual report of the Young Women's Christian Association -of Dunedin appears the foll-ow-ing paragraph : — "The o-iitstanding feature- was the faith and trust that the public hav-e in the association, from the policeman who sent wande rers to- us for a be-d, saying 'The Y.M .C-.A. will never turn anyoneaway,' the young men who (having k-ept their girls -out too la-te at night) la.nded them on the doorstep at 2 a.m. 011 New Year's Eve, to the cldcrly ladies who said they would never have v-entured to co-me if they could not have stayed with us."
