Mr W. D. Piko is the latest aspirant for election, to the vaoancy on the Wellington Education Board. The candidates now are Messrs O. F. A. Wliiteford, W. E. Gasooigne, T. O. Prichard, and Pike. Mrs G. J. McOarthy won the iunior championship of the Greymouth Golf C'lub. She is a first year player and is also holder of^ the senior championship of the Greymouth Tennis Oluh. The Rev. Mr Conway, who was mentioiied in the London cahlegrams yesterday in eonnection with the Cli'inese massacre, is in Auckland. He thinks that some other missioners may also he sale. A Dunedin Press Association telegram states that Mr Peter Walker Aitken, M.Se., has been nominated as the second Otago candidate ior tfie Rhodes Scholal-ship. Mr Aitken is 23 vears of age and he has had a distfniguished career acadcmica,! iy and in sport. In the latter field he has repi-esented his oolle^e in. senior Rngb and boxing. Mr W- Hunter, secretary of the Palmerston North High School Board of Govertiors, was, at last week's meeting, accorded a vote of condolence in ihe death of his brother. A motion oi' condolence with Mr W. T. Penny, a member of. the board, in the death of his brother, was also carried. Mr J A. NasK, M.P., alluded to the late Mr Penny as a very respected gentleman of a genial character. The Hon. G. J. Aiiderson, Minister for Marino, arrived from Christchurch last evening and was met by Mr W. J. Girling, M.P. This morning the Minister travelled to Havelock, where he pi'oceedtd by "launch to Manaroa, in Pelorus Sound, on business coniiected with his Department. This afternoon Mr Andersoa proceeds to Picton via Portage and he leaves for Wellington by the Ngaio to-night. At Picton Ali- Girling will interview the Minister in regard to wharf lratters in Picton.. J " i During the reception accorded this morning to the Minister for Education (the Hon. 11. A. Wright), Mr W. D. Pik© took the opportunity to refer to- the loss the. district liad recently sustained in the death of its greatest educationist, the late Mr B. H. Penny. Mr Pike said he knew that Mr Wright had been proud to have Mr Penny as colleague on the Wellington Education Board and that he felt his death — as Marlborough people felt it — as a oalamity not only to the "district, but to the Board. The Minister said he was glad of tlie cpportunity to express his regret and the regret of the Wellington Education Board at Mr Penny 's death. "It came to us' in Wellington, he said, "as a very great sliock and all our sympathy is tendered to his relatives." Our Auckland oorrespondent telegraphs as follows: — An. Auckland Grammar School boy (Mr G. H. Wooller), son of the headmaster of Point Ghevalier School, has been appoiuted to oue of tlie New Zealand icadetships iat the Royal Military (College at Sandhurst, England. This year fwp cadetships were available to New Zealanders, and there: were a large nmnher of applicants from the various secondary school s throughout the Dominion. P'reviously New Zealand military Cadets were trained at Duntroon College in Australia. Mr Woollor will, on completion of an eighbeen months' coursei at Sandhurst, be attached to a unit of the British regular Army for six months before returning to New Zealand, where he will be appointed to the New Zealand Army Staff. The appointment of Cadets to Sandhurst dtepends entirely on the number of vacancies which exist each year.
