A most daring niail van robbery, involving an unknown but certainly a largo amouiit in diamonds and cheques, occurred in Hatton Gar- ' den, the diamond centre of tbe world. A contractor'is van oalled at tbe Post Office, where a postman took bags containing registered ietters and packages and plaoed tliem in in ihe van, which was then driven to Smithfield Post Offce. Here tbe postman signed for a further consignment.. He returned to tlie street, where he wa i astounded to find that the van and d river had disappeared. The pol-ice stations throughout Ixmdon weie immediately warned and the whole force wero on tlie look-out. The van was found in a quiet street off Gosswell Road with the mail-bags goue It has been ascertained that the bags wero transferred to a private car, which drove off rapidly. Tlie packages representerl practically tlie whole week-end correspondence of Hatton Garden. As th© usual practice of Hatton Garden merchanvs is to despateh stones of great value at the weekend, the Daily Express says that the estimated vahie pf tbe ' mail-bags was at least £80,000 The police are sconring London, The driver secured his post in recogpition of services during tlie general strike.
