BOARD OF TRADE RECOMMENDATION.
CONSTRUCTION OF MERCAN-
TILE SHIPPING
REDUCTTON IN MEAT CON-
SUMPTION
[Press Association.] Australian and N.Z. Cable Association LONDON, Sept. 29.
The interim report of the Board of Trade's committee on increased prices of commodities recommends the need for hastening the construction of mercantile shipping as far as is compatible with naval needs, and provision for Sufficient men at the docks and on the railways to prevent a renewal of congestion. There should bo a larger restriction of imports of less necessary commoditfe^. The Government's policy on a large scale of purchases of meat had proved a success. Tho Government should develop as far as possible the sources of supply whenco they can make direct purchases. Tho committee urges all not engaged in severe manual labor who ay present eat meat daily to abstain on one day a. week, believing that a large number are only waiting for clear authoritative guida.nco to press this self-denial as a public duty. Tho local authorities! should bo empowered to open municipal shops for tho sale of milk, meat, bacon, and hecessarv foodstuffs where there is reason to believe that any group of retailers .are using tho present abnormal situation to obtain excessive profits.
