A London cablegram reports the death of Donald Dinnie, the famous Scottish athlete. He Avon £11,000 in contests.
Dr. W. E-. Redman, of Pictoh, and Dr. R-. Noble-Adams, of Blenheim, captains in the New Zealand Medical Corps, have been promoted to be majors.
Sir Henry Rider Haggard, who is visiting these Dominions to investigate the general question of postwar farm settlement for soldiers, arrived at Hobart by the Turaliina yesterday.
A London cablegram reports the death of Sir John Eldon Gorst, in his: 81st year. Sir John Gorst was Civil Commissioner for the Waikato, Ne-v Zealand, in 1861-63, and wao Un^er-Secretary for India in 1886-91. In 1914 he met with an accident, and had never been the same man since. He succumbed to an attack of influenza, after a brief illness.
Mr T. W. Orr has made arrangements for a trip to Scotland, and, if lie succeeds in securing a passage on the steamer by which he hopes to travel, will leave Blenheim on the 20th inst. Thirty years have elapsed since Mr Orr left his native land, and he loolrs forward to resuming associations with relatives and old friends at Glasgovy, the scene of his earlier years. Last night the Lower Wairau River Board, of which Mr Orr is the secretary, granted him six months' leave of absence, and appointed Mr R. Wanden as acting-secretary for that interval.
The Very Rev. Chancellor Price, v well-known Roman Catholic cleric oi Christchurch, has been ordered to take a complete rest under penalty oi a serious breakdown, and ho will leave for Eurcp© about the end oi April. The route has not yet been decitled upon, but Father Price will probably go via Thursday Island to Hong "Kong, and c. then proceed through the Panama Canal to the United States, afterwards travelling to England. He; is expected to bt> away for at least a year, and if his health" improves ■sufficiently," he will offer his services as a chaplain with the forces. '.
The death occurred on Sunday at the Palmerston. North hospital of. Mr Tom Bills, fourth son of the late Mr James Bills, of Otaki', , .well-k'nowti both in the Manawatu and Horowhonua districts. Tho deceased was born in Picton. He resided for about four years in Otaki, afterwards taking tip his residence in Palmerston North, where he entered into business.. Failing health compelled him to enter the hospital there,' and he made a good recovery- hut wai* obliged later to re-enter the. hospital. Tho deceased was 'unmarried, '■... and aged ,44 'years, ru -.
