HOW TO CHECK THEfR SPREAD.
l The following special committee ot t the Wellington Hospital and Chantry able * Aid' Board was recently ap^ ) pointed to consider the question of t venereal diseases, more particularly in 1 view of th© report" of a committee of T the recent Medical Congress in Auckr land, and the report on the subject 3 furnished-by the medical superinten- > dent of the hospital (Dr Hardwick Smith):—Rev. W. A. Evans (chairs man), Dr Platts Mills, Mrs McLaren, > Dc McKenzie, Rev. J. X, Elliott, I Rev. H Van Staveren, Messrs G. > Castle, D. McLaren, and J. Smith. t After carefully considering the ref ports referred to, the committee has • made the following recommendations > to th© Hospital Board:—• > (1) That facilities be provided at the ; hospital and dispensaries for the treatL ment of persons suffering from * venereal diseases. - • - (2) That no charge be,made to the ' medical practitioners in the Welling- '■■ ton hospital district for tests made in the bacteriological ..department-, in-con-nection with examinations in regard to venereal diseases.. , (3) That the local branch of the British Medical Association be asked i to co-oj>erate witth the Board for the l purpose of giving lectures in connec- ! ,tioii with venereal diseases. [ (4) That all institutions such as schools, universities, young men's and i .women's associations, etc., have a course' of health lectures delivered by members of the medical profession, . and ihat medical officers attached to i the defence forces lecture to the forces when in camp. . -1 ■ . (5) That the Minister \n charge of |, the -defence forces give instructions to , j discourage girls from visiting camps. (6) That the shipping companies be ' approached with a view to making I grants to their medical officers for the i purpose of enabling them to give leo- •■ tures on venereal diseases to the officers, passengers, and crews on ships. (7) That the public bodies, such as j hospital boards, make grants to mem- ' bers of.the medical profession. for leo--1 i tures (to be duly advertised) to young ' men and women. • (8) That the Education Department I be approached with a view to making . the subject of sex physiology a comI pulsory subject on the syllabus for I teachers' examinations, and that a 1 oourae of lectures be given to teachers j by medical practitioners (where posI 1 sible by women doctors to Tvomen j teachers). (9) That copies of the foregoing re- ! commendations be forwarded io all ! the hospital boards in the Dominion and that they be asked to co-operate with tliis board in an xirgent crusfuie. (10) That a deputation comprising members of this committee wait upon j the Minister for Public Health at the j earliest opportunity, and bring before • his notice the foregoing recommenda- | tions regarding payments of grants, I with a view to obtaining 'assistance i from the Government. (11). That the Minister for Public ; Health be recommended to :have an ~ Order-in-Council adopted giving effect •t. the provisions contained in clause jl9 of the Hospitals and Charitable : Institutions Amendment Act, 1913. j The Minister for Public Health nas j been approached with a view to \e- ( ceiving the members of the special • committee as a deputation in i-oiuk-o- ---■! tion with tihe above resolution. j The report was adopted.
