BANNOCKBURN.

« THE SEXCENTENARY CELE-

BRATED

In common with Scotsmen in many partts of the world, members of the Marlborough Scottish Society last night celebrated the sexcentenairy ot the Battle of Bamiockburn by means of a social gathering in the Loloma tea-rooms. There was a large attendance, including his Worship the Mayor (Mr J. J. Oorry). Dr J. F. Bennett (president of the Society) controlled the proceedings, which were eminently worthy of the occasion.

An excellent repast was provided by Mr Linstrom. Proceedings were of an impromptu nature, and addresses given by several gentlemen present were interspersed, with song and story. The company having been welcomed by the president, Mr J. J. Corry. gave a happily-worded address, and expressed Iris pleasure at being present. The chief theme of discussion throughout was, of course, tihe glorious victory of which they were celebrating the six hundredth anniversary that day, and Mr J. R. Sharp interested the audience with a comprehensive discourse on the battle oi Dannockburn arid the events in Scottish history leading up to and following this momentous battle. As the president explained early in the proceedings, they were not festive with the idea of crowing over the English, but the occasion was such a notable one in the history of Scotland that it was only meet that it should be fittingly observed. "Bannockburn and the memories of "Wallace and Bruce" was honored'by a toast, followed by the singing of "Scots Wha Hae" by Messrs J. R, Sharp. C. Whelan, and H. W. Reed. An entertaining address was subsequently delivered by Mr John Duncan, and Major Lusk.and Mr J. A. Merchant, members of the Timber, Mining, and Settlement Commission visiting Mairlborougli, also addressed the gathering. In proposing the toast of "The Pre>sident" Mr J. R. Sharp incidentally expressed the hope tKat regular Inglesides would be held during the year, and he felt sure that much of their latent talent would be developed thereby. He expressed pleasure at the presence of Mr Robert Allan aftier a serious illness, and invited him to address the gathering at a later stage. Dr Bennett, in reply, paid a tribute to the-energy of his committee, which was fortunate in the possession of such an ■enthusiastic secretary as Mr Mackintosh.

The laird of Drumolog was enthusiastically received, and having remarked upon the enjoy ablen<ess of the function, gave a spirited recital of an excerpt of Sir Walter Scott's "Lord of the Isles," at the wish ot the gathering. 'Tihe concluding toast was "The Secretary," and iii proposing it Mr J>. F. Fleming referred in terms of appreciation to the very practical manner in which Mr Mackintosh had displayed his interest in the Society.

In the course of his reply Mr Mackintosh mad© a vigoixnis plea for enterprising action by members of the Society so as to raise funds for the purchase of a hall. . .

The .following contributed to the programme of entertainment: Messrs Simpson, Paton, Livingston, D. F. Fleming, Galloway, H. W. R-eed, T. A. Revell, W. M. Lambie, C. Wthelan, E. F. Kain, and Dr. Bennett. Recdta*tions were delivered by Mr A. Prentice, Mr A. R. Wright told some humorous stories, Mr Robt, Reid gjave a reading, ajid Piper Ferguson Lang pleased the gathering with bagpipe selections and national dances. Mr F. P.
