THE ASSAILANT ARRESTED.

[Press Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, June,24 A man entered the shop of Metz, a pawnbroker in the city, this ; morning and asked to see a brooch. While Metz was picking the brooch out of the window the man dealt_ him four severe blows on. the head with a steel

spanner. He failed to stun the victim and so dropped the spanner and strolled into 'the street and walked quietly away. Metz staggered out and called on some people to stop 'his assailant, which was done, and an arrest ■effected.

' Metz received three scalp wounds and a nasty cut between the eyes. He received medical attention at once. Nothing was taken from the shop. It is believed that the assailant is an Australian criminal.
