ADDINGTON STOCK MARKET
[press association. ]
CHRISTCHURCH, Feb. 5
At the Addington live stock market to-day there was again a heavy yarding of etore sheep, but very small entries of fat sheep and lambs. Other descriptions of stock camo forward in average numbers, and there was a good attendance.- Store sheep were in good demand, and fat lambs sold at about last week's rates, but fat sheep «sold at a considerable advance in consequence of the very short yarding. There was an advance in fat cattle, as the yarding was barely equal to requirements. v Bacon pigs were easier, but porkers showed no change.
Store sheep were again represented by a large entry. Wethers were fewer in number, while ewes were more numerous, lambs forming approximately about the same percentage as last week. There was. a large attendance, and, considering the unsettled state of affairs in the sheep world, the sale passed off very well. There were few withdrawals, although trade was a little less brisk than the previous week, especially for wethers and ordinary classes of ewe lambs. Forward rape lambs sold at prices on a par with those ruling a week earlier, but wethers of various ages went perhaps 6d per head lower all round* whilst ewes were unchanged. A Southland buyer secured a number of lines of merino ewes for transport to Invercargill. Following was the range of prices:—Lambs, good rape sorts, 12s 9d to 13s 6d, extra to 21s Id, fair sorts 12s to 13s 6d, average lines 10s 6d to 11s 9d, medium 9s to 9s 6d small and inferior 7s 6d to 8s 6d ■ ewes, two-tooth, 15s 6d for small and medium classes, better sorts making 17s 6d to 19s sd, two and- four-tooth (small) 16s, four, six and eight-tooth 12s to 16s 6d (according to class and condition), full and failing mouth (good class) 11s 6d to 'l2s 6d, six a.nd eight-tooth (good sorts) to 16s 9d •sound-mouth 14s to 15s 6d, aged and cull sorts 3s for merinos to 6s for other descriptions;-, wethers, four and sixtooth 14s to 14s 9d, two-tooth (small) l^s to 13s.
There were only 727 fat lambs penned, and they were mostly of medium quality. The sale was not very brisk, and prices were about the same as last week. Best lambs made 16s to 17s Bd, and lighter 13s Id to 15s 6d.
The yarding of fat sheep totalled a little under SOOOj the supply bein^ barely sufficient for butchers''requirements. The consequence was that prices advanced 2s per head for ewes, and Is 6d for wethers. The range of prices was: Prime wethers 20s to 22s lOd, lighter 17s to 19s 6d; prime ewes 18s to 225, others 15s to 17s 6d. One hundred and seventy-six head of fat oattle came forward, against 193 -the previous week and 227 on January 22nd. The yarding included some exceptionally good animals, and the demand, owing to short supply, was much keener than the previous week. Beef showed an advance all round equal^#ls 6d per 1001b. Steers realised £7 17s 6d to £11, extra £13 ss, £14, and £14.155; heifers £5 7s 6d to £11, extra to £12; and cows £5 15s to £8 ss, extra £10 5s to £12. Beef brought 23s 6d to 31s 6d per 1001b, according to quality. The yarding of store cattle was a medium one, and consisted principally of fifteen to eighteen-months cattle. The market showed no improvement on recent sales, being if anything a shade weaker. Yearlings made £1 17s j fifteen to eighteen-months sorts £d 15s to £4, two-year' steers £4 8s two-year heifers (good) £5, two and a-half-year steers £6 Is, and cows £2 5s to £4 lOsf
Dairy cows made £4 10s to £10. Pigs were represented by a good entry, but the demand for baconers was easier. Porkers, on the other hand, were m fair demand, but there was no change in values since the previous week. No choppers came forward. Heayy baconers realised 60s to-655, medium 50s-to 57s 6d, and smaller sorts 42s to 48s, equivalent to 4jd to 4id per lb. The best porkers made 38s to 445, and lighter sorts 33s to 375, equal to s£d to sjd per lb There was a fair entry of store pigs] &j a i oo^ demand. Large stores made 32s to 375, and smaller sorts Weaners sold well, prices ranging from 13s to 16s.
