MILES OF CANALS

£40,000,000 WILL NOT COVER

THE DAMAGE

(Received Feb. 2, 8.40 a.m.) PARIS, Feb. 1. Reuters Paris correspondent states that many miles of streets in the richest equally with the poor quarters are still practically canals, on which boats day and night carry mails, telegrams, provisions, and fuel. It is now certain that the original estimate of £40,000,000 as the extent of the damage will be far exceeded in Paris and suburbs, without reckoning loss of employment by hundreds of thousands of workers.
