MAORI SERIOUSLY INJURED

WAKAPUAKA, Feb. 1. A serious accident,. which might easily have had a fatal result, occurred on the Wakapuaka-Nelson roadS this afternoon.

Warren Stevens, a Maori, was taking a cow from Nelson to the pa. The cow strayed over the bank of the road. Stevens dismounted, and.-, was driving the cow on to the roadagain when the animal turned on hint and gored him on the right thigh,, inflicting a large wound. It also attacked him on the calf of the leg,but this was protected by leggings. While Stevens was prostrate thecow returned to the attack, but fortunately the Rev. Mr Rewa, a native clergyman, who was riding past on, a bicycle, heroically seized the brute* by the horns and threw it on its back.

Messrs Baumgart and Wilkin, of the Eastern Extension Cable Company's staff, procured a trap, andi the injured man was taken to Harman's homestead. Dr. Gibbs wastelephoned for, and rendered assistance to Stevens at the pa, where he>is progressing favourably.
