At the instance of the Democratic party in the House of Representatives a committee has been appointed to investigate charges of bribery brought against members of Congress, newspapers, and officials.
It is alleged that sums were disbursed with the view of facilitating the purchase of the Danish West Indies. The charges are based on an alleged report of one Captain Christmas, said to have been a secret agent of the Danish Government, who claims 10 per cent, of the total price to recoup him for his
Mr Abner McKinley, a brother of the late President, is reported to be involved in the scandal.
Mr Hay, Secretary of State, refuses to recognise Christmas as an intermediary.
