London, March 27.
Cecil Rhodes is dead. Rhodes expressed a wish to be buried at Matoppo Hill.
Sir Gordon Sprigg, the Cape Premier, has decided that a public funeral service be held in Capetown Cathedral,
Warm tributes are paid by the newspapers to the Empire-builder, and his great ideal in regarding his fortunes as a sacred trust for others. Widespread regret is expressed.
It is recognised that the death of Mr Rhodes will not materially affect his South African enterprise, inasmuch as the broad lines of imperialistic policy are firmly laid.
The pro-Boer verdict on the Continent is that Rhodes was a good sower, but was not distined to reap the harvest. Some writers are virulent.
