LOWER WAIRAU KIVEK BOARD.
Thb monthly meeting of the Lower Wairau River Board was held last evening, there being present : — Messrs Rayner (Chairman), Adams, Birch, Meehan. THE OVEBFLOW SCHEME. Messrs Boyce and Bons wrote saying that they could not s»e their way to take over Mr Higgins' contract. Mr Higgins wrote asking to be relieved of balance of oontraot. Be was at present busy harvesting. During the last twelve months floods and wetness, and the tramping of cattle over the banks made had handicapped him. He asked ftr payment of £30 due. The Engineer stated that 16 chains of banking had been done, and 40 chains remained. The Chairman said this was th< most difficult part of the scheme, and the contractor had taken it at too low a price. After some discussion, it was resolved that the.Engineer be instructed to ask Mr Higgins what he would carry on the work for, and accept a reasonable ofler ; and failing an cfler call for fresh tenders. Messrs Boyce and Bons, the contractors for the Overflow Eehef Soheme, agreed to carry out the proposed work of setticg back the north bank of the intake of the channel for £75,_The offer was accepted. It was also resolved to notify Mr Onior, lessee of the~ Board's land (160 acres) at this point, that the Board would resume 40 acres contained m the channel, an arrangement to be made as to rent. GBNEBAL, Mr H. B. Huddlestone again called attention to the Board's cul vert near Mowat's wool-shed, the condition of which threatened the Beverley property.— The Engineer explained that the holidays had interfered with the work. Mr G. Chandler wrote asking for payment of the subsidy granted for banking. The arrangement was that Mr Chandler should collect rates from Mr Lees, owner of the property, but the latter aaid he did not owe any rates.— lt was decided to pay £4. Thelnspeotor reported that willows required cutting behind Dodson'c bank, and on the Manse Road bank ; and that Mr Purkiss asked for gravelling over the bank near his place.— The report was held over for the new Board. Mr Adams moved that the wilbwe from the Overflow upwards be oleared ou* by the Inspector. —Carried. FINANCE. The following was '.Lo monthly financial statement : — Bank balance?
