AN ENTHUSIASTIC MEETING.

REACHED £5000.

A most tniLutias'ic and successiul mass meeting wan held at the Opera Bouse to-night m connection with the war m South Africa. About two thousand were present, including 300 Volunteers m UDiform, The Garrison and three other bands took part. The hall was decorated with flags, and two field guns were mounted on the stage.
The Mayor moved, "That this meeting, while cordially approving of the action of the Government m sending two contingents to South Africa, is of opinion that a third contingent should be despatched as early as possible;" This was spoken to by Oclosfcl Dalgetty, Messrs Collins, Lewis, and Laurenson, M.H.B.'s, and carried amidst enthusiastic cheers.
During the evening patriotic songs were given, and the bands played patriotic airs. The amount gathered m the room was £220 6s 7&d, and this with amounts to hand brings the Patriotic and Canterbury War Funds up to over £50(K , tnd money is still coming m from country districts. *
The Picton collectors handed £40 to ihe Mayor for this fund on Tuesday. Other amounts are coming m, which will be handed over later on. The collectors contemplate having a o ncert at Waitohi Valley for the cause.
