Some bell-ringing, choruses, gun-firing, and the burning of blue^snd red lights, also marked the occasion. . Laws Tennis.— On New Year's Day a series of matobes was played on the Marlborough LawnjTennis Club's Ground, Dillon street, between representatives of that olub and a Wellington team. The result was decided by points, Wellington sooring 742, and the local olub 741. As far as games went they won five single games out of six played, and one double out of three, Thb Wab Bblilbt Fund.— A reminder is given of the patriotic, maet whiob is convened for to-night at Bwart's Hall to dieousß the War Belief Fund claims. Stirring addresses will be given, and the Garrison Band will render patriotic selections ; the gathering Bbould, therefore, be large, and the proceedings enthusiastic, Allhqbd Laborrt.— At the Polioe Court this morning, before Mr J. Allen, 8.M., a youth named Bernard Duffy was oharged with breaking and entering the store of Hugh Campbell, at Tua Marine, and stealing therefrom 19a ll|d m money and 41b of lollies of the value of 8b 6d. BergtMajor Mason asked for a remand until Friday atiioon, whioh was granted. The lad's employer entered into a surety of £50 for his appearance, he being released on bail. Hotel Isipbovkmbnts.— We learn that it is the intention of the owners of the Federal Hotel, Fioton, to at onoe oommenoe the erection of a large addition to the hotel, whioh will provide for a billiard room on the ground floor and increased bedroom accommodation on the second storey. Bivbb Boabd Election. — There were great complainto made at the insufficient notice given of the forthcoming general election of the Lower Wairau Biver Board Very few people knew that nominations dosed at noon yesterday. The Board's advertisement oalling for nominations was inserted onoe only, the Saturday hffore Christmas ; but m the excitement incidental to the holidays, little notioe waß taken of it, and m tin publio interest it certainly should have appeared again a few daya previous to the date for dosing nominations. Aoknowlkdombnt. — The band • master and Treasurer of the Blenheim Garrison Band waited on Mrs Allen on New Year's morning and presented the proceeds of the Snnday afternoon eaored oonoert amounting to £2 7s as an addition to the War Fund being oolleoted m Pioton. The Pioton collectors deßire to thank the band publioly and also to acknowledge their courtesy m playing gratuitously for the concert, after a hard day's work at the regatta. Militia.— Owing to the reverses reoeived by oar army m the Transvaal, it is considered by the Cabinet to bold an important meeting with a view of oalling out (be Militia, equally bo important is the fact 'hat the chop for Jfrjaaa and New Year presents is at the Medical Hall, Fbabe Sbaw Chem lit, Bleohein.— Apvr.

School CoMHifTBB Elbotion.— A largely i attended meeting of the householders was held m the Pioton Borough Sohoolroom . last night, for the purpose of eleoting a Committee In place of those who lately resigned. Mr A. P, Seymour was voted to the ohair. Seven householders bad been , nominated previous to the meeting, and the Chairman stated he was prepared to reoeive other names up to eight o'elook. During the interval eeven other names were proposed, all of whom consented to aot. Mr Taylor, lace Chairman ot the old Committee, explained that the Committee resigned m a body as a test of the confidence of the householders, after their friction with the Board. At eight o'olook the Chairman read out the fourteen nameß nominated, and asked the meeting how they would prefer to proceed with the election— by ballot or otherwise. Mr Fell proposed that the election should be by ballot, and this was carried. For some minutes there wa quite a busy siene while people voted, after the manner of a more important eleotion, Messrs Bobertabaw and Harris were uppointed scrutineers. The result of the ba lot was the return of the. old Committee, with two new members ot their own choice, Messrs T. Philpottß and J. Bliszard. The following are the numbers of votes obtained by eßob oandidate :— Mr G. Smith, sen , 46 , Mr E. Blizzud, 45; Mr J. Blizaard, 45; MrPbilpo'tP, 44; Mr Taylor, 43; Mr Bathgate, 48 ; Mr Aocear, 42 ; Mr Miles, 21 ; Mr Baxter, 21; Mr Fredericks, 19; Mr Busoh, 19; Mr Oragg, 19; Mr Card, 19; Mr Webster, 18.' Mr Taylor was re-eleoted Chairman of the Committee, which will meet to morrow evening to transaot business. The meeting was a most orderly one, and looked more like a pleasant gathoriog of friends than an eleotion. Several ladieß were present, and took an aotive interest m the result.
