A SOLDIER'S CHANCES, — «*. — ONE IN 4 THOUSAND. According to official figures (remarks a London Journal) only one bulle< out of every 1000 fired m th^ Crimean War took effect. Bui when the number of deaths from ex posure and disease is reorded, a soldier's chance of esoape becomes more limited. The hardships endured by British troops m the Ma r> war, for instance, accounted for an alarming number of deaths. Speaking on this' subject to a reporter of A Maori War Veteran. the Hawera Morning Post, Mr George Walker, who was through the Maori war under General Ohute, said:— "Yes, the hardships were terrible. On one occasion we were lost m the bueh for five days, and had to eat our pack horses." " I suppose the exposure told on you?" "It did, indeed, said Mr Walker. " In fact it resulted, some years ago, m a severe attack of sciatica. Intense gnawing pains were felt at the back of thigh and leg. On the outside the knee was tender, and the muscles of the leg and thigh wasted away. The hot springs were tried, but without any permanent effect. At last the muscles of one leg became so contracted that my knee was drawn up to my ear. The agony was intense, and often I would he awake at night vainly endeavouring ! to rest. Ultimately I had to be! taken m a cub to the hospital. But ' when I came out of the hospital my kr cc was still drawn to my ear, and the pain I suffered was excruciating. On the recommendation of a lady visitor, who said her husband had suffered similarly and had been cured by Dr. Williams' pink pills, I commenced using them. Before 1 had taken a box and a half I got my leg half way down, and could get aboii' with a stick. Boon I was able o dispense with the stick aud do light work, as my leg was m its tighr position again. I have w>\ since been troubled with sciatica. All pain has gone, the muscles of my limbs are supple and pliable, and I can row, thanks to Dr. Williamb' pink pills, actively carry on my bu*i- ! ness as a fishmonger."
