WEU-iNQTOif, January 1. There was very little demonatra--1 tion at the opening of the New Year. : A few rockets were fired and bells ' rung, but there were not many 1 people about. ! Tho weather this nnrning was I bright and sunny, but a strong wind ■ was blowing as usual. : Both sea and road excursions were , largely patronised. The Otago and i Wellington cricket match attracted ■ fair numbers, tut the majority of I those remaining m town journeyed i to Newtown, where the contingent is camping.
