Holiday-making was general, and probibly the day is a record bna ' as tar as crowds are concerned. Pioton never wore a more populous appearance ; the streets of the town were thronged. The Eotomabana from Wellington brought 1158 excursionists, and the Rotorua followed her up. The trip across the Straits was rather rough* About 200 of the excursionists paid a flying visit to Blenheim. The weather i was extremely hot at Pioton, and several ladies fainted. Not muoh interest was taken iv the regatta, ia 1 which the Blenheim crew did not gain a place, two of the men having to be | replaced at tbe last moment. Wellington, December 30. There was some heavy scoring this afternoon m the match between i Wellington v. Otago. The former won the toss, and, after losing Quee and Ashbolt '-tot 10, Tucke>and Midlane put on 153. The former again played a first-olasa innings, scoring much faster than usual, and without giving a chance. Be totted up 73* when he was bowled by Biev wright. Midlane and RiohardGon continued scoring, no other wicket falling by 6 p.m., when the total stood at 281 for 3. Midlane, who is ! still m bis teens, was 10Q and ( Eichardson 56. The former might have been both caught and stumped, but the captain gave no chanca. Th» bowling was very poor. Hope, through a strain, could cot take the ball at all. Ligginu put on for two overs, from which 3 wides, i runs i.3 byes were obtained Extras numbered 39 m all. The fielding was off, but this was partly because the men were unused to the peouliar turf on the Basin Reserve* January- 1. v There was some further heavy scoring to-day. Midlane carried his total to 149 before he was badly run out, the wicket being simply thrown away: but at 124 he -was really oaughfc by the wicket-keeper, only the umpire did not heed it. He and Riohlrdson put on 207 m all, and the latter oontinuedtill his innings had readied 113, when he was caught. Williams hit hard for 42, and, later batsmea failing, the total stopped at 464. Baker took— wiokets for 825, Geddes 4 for 98, and Siedeberg 2 for 51. Whan Otago went m they col* apsed, only making 54 ; but, following on, Baker hit well.
