“EXPRESS” TELEGRAMS.
(From our oiun Correspondent). Wellington, Friday, 6 p.m. Colonel McDonald reports the surrender of the principal Taupo chief Te Hui Hui, and some of his followers. Our forces are still endeavoring to follow Te Kooti, who according to Te Hui Hui’s account,, lost a finger and received a flesh wound in the side during the last engagement. Te Kooti’s followers are from 40 to 50 Chatham Island escapees, and 50 Uriweras. Te Hui Hui says Kooti has received a letter promising help from some of the Waikatos, but Northern accounts say a King’s party had left Waikato seeking utu for some King’s natives put to death by Te Kooti. Mr. McLean is likely to remain North some weeks, and hopes to be able to visit the King at Tokangamutu.
Nelson, Friday noon. A rich gold quartz reef has been discovered at Wangapeka river near Dovedale, [ Motueka Valley, j about 50 miles from Nelson. Splendid specimens. The Land Office was besieged this morning with eager applicants, and 130 acres were bought up before the land could be withdrawn from sale. Great expectations formed.
