THE FLYING SQUADRON COMING TO NEW ZEALAND.
The Flying Squadron got under way early on June 14. The ships forming the squadron were the Liverpool (with the flag of Rear-Admiral Hornby), Endymion, Liffy, Scylla, Bristol, and Barossa. The squadron will take the following route, and the following dates of arrival and departure will be adhered to as far as possible:—
In reference to Sir J. Hay’s objections, expressed in the House of Commons, to the policy of a flying squadron, the Morning Post remarks :—“ The presence of the squadron in Hew Zealand would, Sir J. Hay said, encourage the settlers to expect support which had already been refused to them ; and encourage them also to ‘ seek for reverses ’ in order to implicate the men of the squadron in the colonial struggle. Sir J. Hay has in this almost rivalled Mr. Whalley. To extract Popery out of any given political contretemps is scarcely more ingenious than to detect danger in a visit of the flying squadron to Hew Zealand. The ships are to be not quite three weeks in Hew Zealand waters, and, although the precise day of their departure is rigidly laid down, the colonists are expected to reckon on the co-operation of the squadron, to ensure which they are to court defeat and disaster at the hands of the Maoris. But it would appear, on Sir J. Hay’s own showing, that we need not be much alarmed at the prospect, for he also informed the House of Commons that the Maoris would ‘ be encouraged to abstain from attack ’ at the time of the squadron’s visit. ‘ The whole Pacific,’ Sir J. Hay says, ‘ would be disturbed by this formidable squadron sent to rove at large.” Would the disturbance exceed that caused by the great earthquake, the wave caused by which also extended to Hew Zealand ?”
