SONGS OF LONG AGO.

Fraught with feeling- oft of pleasure—oft of pain, Soft stealing o’er my soul the sound of music came.

Those songs I loved in days gone by— Those songs that now call forth a sigh, For voices then that stirr’d the breast Now sleep in death’s unbroken rest. Oh ! those songs of long ago—stealing o’er my mind, Whispering—gently whispering—soft as summer wind, And soft as evenings shadows creep, They make this dreaming soul to weep. Like murmuring rivers flow along, And echo back the long-hush’d song. Oh ! sweet songs of long ago—of childhood’s happy hours, When playing in the wild woods—through green and shady bowers. We listened to the wild bird’s note i And heard it’s thrilling echoes float, While weaving garlands bright and fair To deck our May Queen’s golden hair. Those songs of long ago—of life’s first early bloom, Sweet voices then that sung, are hushed now in the tomb; They gently, early fell asleep And left lone mourners here to w r eep, Yet, softly stealing o’er the mind, Those songs float on the sighing wind. Fraught with feeling—oft of pleasure—oft of pain, Soft stealing o’er my “soul the sound of music came. Sweet songs I loved in days gone by- • Sweet songs that now call forth a sigh, For voices then that stirr’d my breast Now sleep in death’s unbroken rest. Nina.
