THE BLENHEIM BRASS BAND.

To the Editor of the Marlborough Express. g lK> —Some six or seven years ago the inhabitants of Blenheim felt the great want of a Band of music, and a number of kind ladies and others interested themselves in getting up a considerable subscription to purchase suitable instruments, and pay a bandmaster, but through some untoward reason the Band was broken up, and the instruments lay idle for years ; some got greatly damaged in consequence' while several were lost altogether. At this stage a number of the lovers of music stepped into the gap, and organised a Band afresh ; whether they have been successful, and shown their appreciation and devotion to the pursuit, I leave the public to judge. After a considerable expenditure of money to repair the old instruments, and purchase some new ones, besides time and practice, some small, jealous-minded persons began to find fault because the Band would not be at the beck and call of a certain long gorilla, and wanted the instruments returned back to their store of dirt. Last Saturday, the leader received a letter signed “E. Bythell, Captain,” informing them that they were to be returned by September 13th, which the Band very properly declined to comply with, with the purpose of leaving it to the public to say whether they are right or not in playing for the interest and amusement of the town. For one, I cannot understand the course taken by Capt. Bythell, knowing him, as 1 do, to be a well-meaning man. Some seem to imply that he has been inspired by a certain long, contemptible, ignorant, and overgrown boy, who shall be nameless, although he does not live 1,000 miles from the Post-office. If this is so, I have no doubt this ambitious youth will meet with the reward all presumptious iads get sooner or later.—Yours, &c., Music. ,
