THE NATIVE REBELLION.
Te Kooti attacks Henare Tomoana at Tauranga, and is repulsed with loss.
Telegrams received by the Government on the 10th instant, state that the forces are gx-adually nearing Te Kooti’s position at Poto-aira. Te Kooti has burned all the kaingas on the northern and eastern side of the Taupo Lake. Great fears had been entertained for the last few days regarding the fate of a canoe scouring party of thirty men, which had not returned at the expected time, News was received to-day of their safe return. Rewi Ngatixnanipoto is still with him, and a friendly Maori woman, escaped from Te Kooki’s camp, reports his party very short of ammunition.—lndependent.
Napier telegrams in the Independent, says that news is in from Taupo. Kooti attacked Henare Tomoana at Tauranga, with, report says, 100 foot and 80 horse. Another 100 came up afterwards. Henare beat them all back, killing three of the enemy, with only two of his own men wounded. Kooti fell back upon Tokana, and is said to have a pa there. The Patea and Wanganui natives had not yet got up to Toupo—probably waiting on Kemp. The Mounted Constabulary, 50 strong, are supporting Henare; supplies go forward with them. If the Patea and Wanganui natives are up they will be strong. Kemp has probably kept them waiting. Kooti called out he had killed two friendly scouts at Rotoaira. St. George and orderly all right. LATEST FROM WANGANUI. News was received in Wanganui on the 9th inst. of the slaughter of four of Wirihana’s men who were out scouting at Rotoaira, and who had been surrounded by Te Kooti’s people and killed. The Ngatiporous are taking up a position
at Wailxi. They will form a strong advance guard, behind which it is proposed to locate a strong body of settlers, who may cultivate their lands to a certain extent. Major Kemp, on hearing the reported slaughter of Wirihana’s men, went up the Wanganui river with 100 men on the 9th instant.— lndependent.
