SALE OF FLAX.
We, Warjanui Chronicle, have great pleasure in. laying before our readers the following extract from the letter of a first-class commercial house in London regarding a shipment of flax from Wanganui. The article referred to was got up by our towns man, Mr. Cummins, who has the honor of being the pioneer of the flax trade in this district, also, like other pioneers, has exexpended a large emount of ingenuity, and money, hitherto without any return, in pbinning and preparing the most suitable machinery for utilising the raw material. We hope his day to obtain a suitable return is close at hand. The annexed figures at all events, are very encouraging, and will stimulate a trade which thus bids fair to become one of our staples :—• “ Wo regret to say that the samples of flax you sent, via Panama, have never come to hand, and unfortunately the Asterope has damaged her cargo, so that only two bales are sound. We have however got the following report for your guidance in future shipments The brokers also tell us that the bales, 1 and 2 (the sound), contain the cleanest and best flax they have yet seen from JVeto Zealand : JC 1. to 7.7 Bales long strong good-flax, W colour and well-dressed, valued at £37 No 10. 1 do similar to about, but mixed in colour, valued at £36 No 11. “We think these are satisfactory prices, and hope they may be such as to lead you to make further shipments.”
