(From our own Correspondent). 'Proposed Enormous Reduction of Expenditure. Wellington, Friday G p.m. The Government have introduced a Bill . dealing with Native prisoners. Trials by Court Martial of five ; also special commissions with juries of five, three of whom will be sufficient to concur in a verdict. The Government will explain to-night their Defence policy, when Mr. Fox moves —1. That the existing war expenditure is incompatible with the mainten ance of our National credit; 2. It is neces sary, therefore, to extensively reduce the expenditure of current year —the war expenditure to £150,000. McLean has tabled resolutions authoritatively for sending home two Commissioners to obtain two Regiments by paying £4O per head, if necessary. Stevens has tabled a series of eight resolutions, doing away witlyMh'ovinces, and limiting the Taxation to that required by the .Geun'Ctd Government for its own purlb poses" only. Tancred has tabled eight resolutions to the effect that the Settlers iu disturbed districts must protect themselves, [ 1 ] or abandon properties, and retire on the large centres <>( iiopidAtio-.j-Rolleston has tabled four resolutions proposing a Commission to visit Native districts, and confer with natives as to the causes of complaint, and means of remedy. These three last sets of resolutions come on next week, and are all considered more or less absurd. Yogel has got a fit of gout, and has been absent from the House for several days. Fox’s motion to-night is the first battle ground, and great excitement prevails respecting the policy to be delivered.
