(From our own Correspondent). Total Defeat of the Stafford Ministry. Division 40 to 29; majority, 11. Marlborough on the wrong side. Resignation of Ministers. Mr. Pox forming a Government. Wellington, Friday noon. . The “ Want of Confidence ” debate was rosum d on Tuesday, Ormond and Hanltain occupying the whole day. Wednesday was taken up by Carleton and a few secondraters. On Thursday, Fitzherbert, Featherstone, and Bell were to speak, but the debate suddenly collapsed, the House being weary of its threatened prolongation to next week. Mr. Fox made a splendid reply, but as half-past five approached, ho suddenly stopped half-way and called on the Speaker to go to a division. The result was Ayes, 40, Noes 29. Majority for the Opposition eleven. Ho worth, Cowan, Tancred, and Travers, all of whom belonged to the Opposition, were duo from the South by the Omco to day, therefore the majority was virtually 15 ! All the others voted except Major Brown (gone to the Front) and M’Farlane who paired. Mr. Stafford thereupon moved that the House immediately adjourn until 3 o’clock this afternoon. Eyes and Kenny, the Marlborough members, voted for Government. Wellington, Friday, 6 p.m. The Stafford Ministry has resigned. Mr. Fox has been sent for, and has undertaken to form a new Ministry. It is too early to speculate on its composition, Smythe’s [ Solicitor, Dunedin, ] petition has been reported, but the House declined to accede to its prayer.
